How's this for a real-world casualty of climate change? Chipotle is warning that it might have to stop serving guacamole, reports ThinkProgress. In its annual report, the chain warned investors that events "associated with climate change" are driving up the price of all kinds of ingredients—including avocado—and "we may choose to temporarily suspend serving menu items, such as guacamole or one or more of our salsas, rather than paying the increased cost."
The warning comes as scientists predict that hotter temperatures in California will take a serious toll on the avocado crop in the coming decades. The chain appears to be taking the long view, notes PBS: Chipotle "might be taking proactive steps to address how the climate could affect its business long term." In the shorter term, some folks at Business Insider are pretty happy with the chain's new Sofritas dish, though the guac is extra.
