A Pennsylvania state trooper accidentally shot and killed his pregnant wife while cleaning his gun in their East Norriton home Friday. Police say he didn't realize his .45-caliber handgun was loaded and pulled the trigger while taking it apart; the bullet hit JoAnna Miller, 34, in the head, NBC Philadelphia reports. She died soon after at a hospital, where doctors performed a C-section but could not save her unborn baby. "The baby never had its own breathing or heartbeat," says the coroner.
Police say the unnamed husband was the one to report the incident, which did not involve his service weapon, and that he has been "distraught" and "cooperative." Miller (the Philadelphia Inquirer has her name as JoAnne) was 22 weeks pregnant. The couple's two young children were home at the time, but were not hurt. Neighbors described the couple as happy.
