The Fussy Librarian is out with a new poll that the Guardian thinks is contender for survey of the year: It asked 103 authors of erotic fiction about their sex lives and found that, by and large, these people know of which they write. Some examples:

  • 41% have experimented with BDSM, compared to less than 20% of Americans as a whole
  • 84% have had sex outdoors, versus 54% of Americans

  • 41% have had sex at the office, versus 7% of American women (almost all of the authors in the survey were women)
  • They are three times more likely than the rest of the population to have had 11 or more total partners, and 18% count at least 20
  • 76% have based a sex scene on one of their own escapades
  • 46% have had sex as research for a novel
As Martin Rouse of Melville House observes, the authors generally have the same amount of sex as ordinary folks, but they have far more variety, as evidenced by answers such as "in a canoe" and "on a stack of drywall."
