Nicholas Sarkozy, a right-leaning Hungarian immigrant's son, will be the next president of France, according to initial results from the final round of elections there. Sarkozy's victory within an 85% turnout dashed the hopes of a galvanized Socialist Party, and its candidate Ségolène Royal, of placing the first woman in France's highest office.

Royal has already conceded—the third straight Socialist candidate to do so. Sarkozy has repeatedly promised a change from the ancien regime of centrist Jacques Chirac, appealing to the French right's thirst for tougher stances on crime, immigration and unemployment. The results so far project a 53-47 victory for Sarkozy, who will take office in ten days. (More France stories.)
