Bad Game of Battleship: 5 Craziest Crimes of Week

A bad joke gone awry and a heated Battleship game are among the weirdest crime stories of the week:

  • Cops: Game of Battleship Turned Criminal: An allegedly intoxicated dad was hauled into a Utah jail after he reportedly went ballistic on his teen daughter, accused her of cheating during a game of Battleship, and pointed a loaded rifle at her. The teen then managed to use a cellphone to summon help—even though the phone happened to be disabled.
  • Man Hit by Car Gets a Ticket: Police investigating a small brushfire in New Jersey came across a 50-year-old man lying in the road last weekend. He had been hit by a car and was taken to the hospital, where he was treated for what turned out to be non-life-threatening injuries. But his story doesn't have an entirely happy ending: He ultimately got a ticket from the cops, who alleged that he committed a few wrongs.

  • Moviegoer Likely Now Regrets Asking Woman to Turn Off Phone: You can either ignore rude people who won't turn off their phones before the movie starts or you can confront them. A man at Hollywood's TCL Chinese Theatre chose the latter, a move he probably wishes he could take back. According to a witness, the man politely asked a fellow moviegoer to turn the bright screen off on her cellphone. He finally had to tap her on the shoulder and say, "You need to turn off your phone!"—which is when the woman had a meltdown.
  • 'Don't Joke About Supposedly Dead Friends' Is the Moral of This Story: Unless you know your buddies' sense of humor really, really well, it's probably not a good idea to pull a fast one that involves telling them another mutual friend has gone up to that big Laugh Factory in the Sky. It all went downhill when a Florida man told two of his friends just that. They didn't take it very well—and it didn't end well for him, either.
  • Illegal Hunters Doomed by Facebook Posts: What happens in illegal-hunting country should stay in illegal-hunting country—not be promoted all over social media. Three men who hunted "everything that moved" across the state of Nevada decided to boast about their kills on Facebook, which wildlife officials didn't take too kindly to when they stumbled across the pictures. The suspects face federal charges and may also need to hunt for new living arrangements.
