Minnesota has about 5.5 million people—and has produced about 45 million turkeys this year. In fact, almost one in five of the country's turkeys comes from the state, Vocativ reports. The total number of turkeys forecast to be raised in the US this year, according to the USDA, is 235 million, which is 2% less than last year.
That may sound like a lot, but it's actually the fewest raised here in 28 years, the AP reports. And almost two-thirds of those animals have been raised in just six states: The runner-up for most turkeys produced is Arkansas, which is expected to boast 29 million; third place goes to North Carolina, with 28 million. Indiana, Missouri, and Virginia make up the rest of the top six, with 19 million, 16 million, and another 16 million, respectively, the USDA reports. (More Minnesota stories.)
