Cleveland police today released surveillance video of the fatal police shooting of a 12-year-old boy, and it shows that Tamir Rice got shot within seconds of the arrival of a police car. One officer exited the vehicle and shot the youth "immediately," reports the Plain Dealer, while a second officer, the driver, remained inside the car. The grainy video has no sound, and authorities say that the officer in the passenger seat shouted to Tamir three times to show his hands as the car approached, reports NBC News. Police say Tamir instead made a move for what the officer thought was a real gun. Newly released 911 recordings reveal that the dispatcher never relayed to the responding officers that a caller suggested the gun might be fake. The dispatcher referred to the pellet gun only as "a gun."
"This is not an effort to exonerate," said Deputy Chief Edward Tomba of the video's release. "It's not an effort to show the public that anybody did anything wrong. This is an obvious tragic event where a young member of our community lost their life." The department identified the rookie cop as 26-year-old Timothy Loehmann and his veteran partner as 46-year-old Frank Garmback, reports AP. A grand jury will decide whether any criminal charges will be filed against them. Police did not provide details on whether the officers reported that Tamir said anything to them prior to the shooting. Earlier in the video, Tamir "can been seen pacing on the sidewalk of Cudell Recreation Center, the silhouette of his Airsoft pistol plainly visible at times," in the words of NBC.
