A 26-year-old woman who showed up at a Longmont, Colo., home yesterday to purchase baby clothes she saw advertised on Craigslist was stabbed and beaten, allegedly by the 34-year-old woman who lived there—who police say then reportedly "removed" the unborn child from the mother's womb, the Longmont Times-Call reports. The baby didn't survive, though the mother is said to be recovering after undergoing surgery at a local hospital. She was seven months pregnant at the time of the attack.
Police arrested Dynel Catrece Lane, who reportedly showed up later with the deceased child at the same hospital where the victim was being treated, claiming she'd had a miscarriage, KUSA reports. Lane, who apparently didn't know the victim and is said to have two kids of her own, was arrested and faces charges of attempted first-degree murder, first-degree assault, and child abuse resulting in death. "The issues involving an unborn child are complicated under Colorado law," the Boulder County district attorney tells the Times-Call. "In most circumstances, if a child was not actually born alive, then homicide charges are not possible." (More Craigslist stories.)
