Two current employees and one former worker with Florida's Department of Corrections aren't just accused of being Ku Klux Klan members—the state's attorney general says they're now also facing charges of plotting to kill a former inmate, the AP reports. Thomas Jordan Driver, 25, and David Elliot Morgan, 47, who still work for the DoC, and former worker Charles Thomas Newcomb, 42, were arrested today on charges of conspiring to murder the ex-inmate, who's black, once he got out of jail, the Orlando Sentinel reports. "The defendants plotted the murder as retaliation for a fight between the inmate, who is African American, and Driver," AG Pam Bondi said in a statement, per the Sentinel.
All three men are said to be members of the Traditional American Knights of the Ku Klux Klan, the paper notes. It appears to have taken some legwork to unravel the plot: Agencies that helped piece information together include the DoC, the state Department of Law Enforcement, the Florida Highway Patrol, state fish and wildlife officials, US Customs, and two local sheriff's offices, the Sentinel reports. The trial will take place in Columbia County, the paper adds. (The KKK stirred the pot in Alabama by acknowledging the 50th anniversary of Selma.)
