The New Jersey Devils have only lost three times in regulation in the past 16 games, but that was one too many to hold onto first place. Andrei Kostitsyn scored in the third period to lift the Montreal Canadiens to a 2-1 win over the Devils tonight, displacing New Jersey for the top spot in the Eastern Conference, reports the Associated Press.

The Canadiens (36-21-9) have won three straight and seven of their last 10 for 81 points, one more than the Devils and the Ottawa Senators. Montreal's rookie goalie Carey Price had 31 saves as he improved to 15-9-3. Price has allowed only four goals in the past 92 shots he has faced. Meanwhile, the Canadiens offense has moved into second in the league in goals scored, behind only Ottawa. (More NHL stories.)
