Johnny Depp's dogs were actually the subject of a Senate committee hearing in Australia yesterday. Depp, of course, brought his Yorkshire terriers into Australia illegally and they were almost euthanized, but they managed to escape death. However, Agriculture Department officials had to answer questions about the fiasco yesterday, what with politicians wanting to know how exactly the dogs were allowed into the country without being subjected to the required quarantine. The matter was called "very serious" and "a complete balls up," the Sydney Morning Herald reports—and though "balls up" is an amusing expression, it sounds as if Depp could actually be in serious trouble.

During the 40-minute questioning of department officials, it was revealed that Depp could face up to 10 years in prison or a $263,000 fine over the misdeed. His fellow passengers, flight crew, and pilot did not declare the dogs' presence, nor did customs officers uncover the dogs when they boarded the private jet upon its arrival in the country. It's not clear how much danger Depp is actually in of the matter going to court; the investigation is ongoing. (More Johnny Depp stories.)
