Bowling-Ball Bomb: 5 Craziest Crimes of the Week

A suspect tempting fate via his T-shirt and an island that sadly watched its nearly half-century theft-free streak go down the tubes are among the weirdest crime stories of the week:

• Remote Island Shocked by First Theft in 50 Years: The tiny island of Canna, located in the Inner Scottish Hebrides, boasts a population of less than 30 and prides itself on its nonexistent crime rate; it doesn't even have a police station. The last reported incident was a 2008 sex-assault case, and before that, the theft of a wooden plate from one of the local churches in the 1960s. That changed over the weekend.
• Cops: Drunk Parents Pick Wrong Designated Driver: Two parents in Austin, Texas, exercised great judgment in realizing that neither one of them was sober enough to drive home. But then the great judgment fell off a cliff, say police, with their choice of designated driver—a driver police stopped on I-35, where she was traveling 30mph under the speed limit of 70.

• Man Tries to Blow Up House With Cartoon-Style Bomb: Police: Tyler Butler, a 21-year-old man from Loxahatchee, Fla., was arrested on charges of arson and using an explosive device after cops say he tried to prevent the bank from selling his foreclosed home by blowing up the place. The device firefighters found when they went into Butler's house was something straight out of a Looney Tunes cartoon.
• Man's Curiosity Involves a Gun, Charges: Being incredibly stupid is not a crime in Colorado—but reckless endangerment is, and a man named Adam Hirtle has been charged with it, and more. A police spokesman says that when officers went to a hospital to investigate a report of an accidental gun discharge, the 30-year-old Colorado Springs resident told them "he took his boot off and shot it"—and didn't stop there.
• T-Shirt Irony Is the Best Kind of 'Weird Crimes' Irony: Which is why we can thank Tieren Watson, a 26-year-old Alabama man, for giving us just what we needed this week in this category. Watson, a suspect in a Benton shooting that left a woman seriously injured, perhaps didn't think too hard about his clothing choices as a person wanted by the law—or maybe he just likes to tempt fate.
