Guilty. Jurors today convicted James Holmes of murder in the 2012 massacre in Aurora, Colorado, that left 12 dead and 70 injured. Now they'll move on to the next phase of the trial to determine whether he will get the death penalty or life in prison, reports NBC News. Jurors did not buy the defense's argument that Holmes, now 27, was legally insane at the time of the shooting—he had pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity. Had they done so, he would have been sent to a mental health facility instead of facing prison or the death penalty. The jury deliberated about 12 hours over the course of two days.
Holmes showed no reaction as the guilty verdicts were being read in court, reports AP. (He faced a total of 165 counts.) Holmes never denied his role in the attack. Afterward, he told psychiatrists that he thought the assault would increase his "human capital," which the Denver Post explains is a theory of his own concoction that taking the lives of others would increase the value of his own.
