Not all the news was bleak this week. Here are five stories to prove it:

  • Desperate to Read, Boy Asks Mailman for Junk Mail: When a 12-year-old boy in Utah asked a mailman for junk mail so he could have some reading material, the mailman turned to social media to help the kid get some books. To say he succeeded is a massive understatement.
  • Boy With Cerebral Palsy Inspires at Triathlon: Need some inspiration to get off the couch? Meet 8-year-old Bailey Matthews, who has cerebral palsy but managed to finish a triathlon in a way that had people around the world cheering for him.

  • Cop's Kindness to Homeless Man Melts Hearts: Another day, another viral post about America's police: This time, though, a Florida woman spotted a police officer's random act of kindness and posted a series of photos celebrating Ocala Police Sgt. Erica Hay, who sat down on a curb with a homeless man to share breakfast.
  • 'Army of Moms' Patrol Block in Chicago: When 34-year-old Lucille Barnes was gunned down June 23 in Chicago, a group of local mothers wearing neon-pink shirts that said "Moms on Patrol" set up chairs on street corners to prevent retaliatory violence. It sounds far-fetched, but the move seems to be working.
  • Judy Blume Comes to Hapless Husband's Rescue: Lots of husbands do lots of things that land them in the doghouse, but one Brooklyn man has Judy Blume trying to bail him out. After the man accidentally gave away his wife's treasured copy of Blume's classic, Are You There, God? It's Me, Margaret, he started circulating a flier to get it back. Blume herself got wind of the story, and is trying to write a happy ending.
