Ominous signs from the Rick Perry campaign: Campaign staff are no longer being paid and they've been told the only expense that will be covered is travel, sources tell CBS News. "As the campaign moves along, tough decisions have to be made in respect to both monetary and time-related resources," but the former Texas governor "remains committed to competing in the early states and will continue to have a strong presence in Iowa, New Hampshire, and South Carolina," a campaign spokeswoman said in a statement to Politico.
Last week, Perry failed to make the cut for Fox's prime-time debate, and while CBS reports that staffers have been told they're free to seek work elsewhere, it seems as if quite a few of them are willing to stay on. "Pay is only one reason people do this," Perry's South Carolina state director tells National Journal, which first reported on the pay stoppage. "We'll be able to live off the land for a while." The Journal reports that Perry raised just $1.1 million between April and June, though the super PAC supporting his campaign has much more cash on hand. (More Rick Perry 2016 stories.)
