"Civil unrest, acts of terror and violence" around the world are compromising the livability of cities around the globe, per a new ranking by the Economist Intelligence Unit that surveyed 140 cities. The report notes even cities in North America have suffered, some from the turmoil caused by the deaths of black citizens like Freddie Gray and Sandra Bland. But the top five urban centers, chosen based on how they did in stability, health care, culture and environment, education, and infrastructure categories, offer "relatively few challenges to living standards," the EIU says, per CNN. Last on the list: Damascus, Syria. The top five:

  1. Melbourne, Australia
  2. Vienna, Austria
  3. Vancouver, Canada
  4. Toronto, Canada
  5. Adelaide, Australia, and Calgary, Canada
