Not all the stories in the news are doom and gloom. Here are five of our favorites from the week:

  • Husband's Tribute to Late Wife Is Amazing: Sunflowers were her favorite, so when Babbette Jaquish died last year, husband Don knew the perfect tribute: The Wisconsin farmer planted 400 acres of them—and their seeds will lead to something even better.
  • Pregnant Meteorologist Has a 'Message for the Haters': Complain to meteorologists that it never rains when they say it will, and they'll brush it off. But tell a meteorologist her pregnant stomach looks like "sausage in casing," and you may just start a movement. For proof, witness what's happening in Philly with Katie Fehlinger of the local CBS affiliate.

  • Girl With Down Syndrome Now a Gap Model: Gap had a fashion show in Miami, and one of its models was 9-year-old Kayla Kosmalski, who happens to have Down syndrome. The best part is that it's not a one-off: Her inclusion in the show is part of a larger movement.
  • You've Never Seen Bears Do This: Need an antidote for some of the depressing bear stories in the news of late? Mix a mama bear, five cubs, a backyard pool, and savor.
  • Fast-Acting Motel Manager Saves Dozens: A manager who evacuated a Washington state motel minutes before a massive explosion is being credited with saving dozens of lives, including some who were staying in rooms that were reduced to rubble. All can thank her sharp nose.
