Mike Huckabee plans to visit Kim Davis today as her lawyers continue to try to get her out of jail. The Kentucky county clerk's lawyers have asked Gov. Steve Beshear to grant her an exemption from issuing marriage licenses, arguing that she will suffer "significant, irrevocable, and irreversible harm if she is forced to authorize and approve even one same-sex marriage license with her name on it, against her religious conscience," reports the Washington Post. Beshear, a Democrat, says the matter is between Davis and the courts. He has declined to call a special session of the state legislature to change the state's marriage laws.
Davis' lawyers have asked the US Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit to order Beshear to accommodate her "religious conviction," the AP reports. She is in the Carter County Detention Center for contempt of court and her lawyers say she's in good spirits. Huckabee will pay her a visit before leading an "#ImWithKim Liberty Rally" outside the jail today, where officials are apparently expecting a big crowd: CNN reports that classes at five area schools have been canceled to ease traffic, giving around 1,000 kids the day off. Around 30 pro-Davis protesters gathered yesterday outside the home of US District Judge David Bunning, who sent Davis to jail last week, the AP reports. (More Kim Davis stories.)
