US stocks managed to shake off an early slump and end slightly higher Tuesday. The Dow Jones industrial average edged up 19 points, or 0.1%, to 17,812. The Standard & Poor's 500 index rose two points, or 0.1%, to 2,089. The Nasdaq composite inched up a fraction to 5,102.
The price of crude oil jumped 3% after Turkey shot down a Russian fighter plane near the Syrian border. Energy stocks rose along with the price of oil. Exxon Mobil rose 2% and Chevron gained 1.5%. The heightened tensions in the Middle East, combined with a drop in a measure of consumer confidence last month, helped send travel-related stocks lower. Cruise lines, Expedia, and airline stocks all fell. (More stock market stories.)
