Stocks are closing mostly higher in light trading ahead of the Thanksgiving holiday in the US. The Dow Jones industrial average edged up a point to 17,813 Wednesday. The Standard & Poor's 500 index was little changed at 2,088. The Nasdaq composite gained 13 points, or 0.3%, to 5,116. US markets will be closed Thursday for Thanksgiving. They will reopen on an abbreviated schedule Friday.
Several stocks moved on earnings news Wednesday. Deere jumped 5% after the maker of farm equipment reported earnings that beat analysts' forecasts. HP sank 14% after reporting weak sales of PCs, printers, and commercial software. Hewlett Packard Enterprise rose 3% after sales of hardware for data centers improved. (More stock market stories.)
