Apple has finally come up with a way to boost the battery life of your iPhone but, uncharacteristically for the company, it's not very pretty. On Tuesday, Apple released a $99 iPhone case with a built in battery that will let you talk for 25 hours or browse over 4G for 18 hours when plugged into your iPhone 6 or 6S. You're expecting a sleek design, right? Well, the case looks much like an ordinary silicone cover, except that it has an Apple logo and a battery protruding out the back. Available in charcoal gray or white, it "looks like a cheap Chinese knockoff," reports the Guardian. Or like "your phone will soon give birth to a rectangular alien," writes Joanna Stern at the Wall Street Journal.
Nick Statt at the Verge notes the case is "for giving you extra juice, which is arguably more important than how nice the device looks." But he adds the design of Apple's new case is disappointing, not least because the case doesn't offer as much extra battery life as rival models. And Statt says this isn't Apple’s only misstep as of late. First there was the iPhone 6's protruding camera. Apple's iPad Pro Smart Cover with keyboard also includes a weird hump and the iPad Pencil and the Magic Mouse 2 are awkward to charge, he says. "All of these design decisions represent the kind of thinking that Apple used to pride itself on avoiding" under Steve Jobs, Statt writes. Then the goal was to "achieve perfection."
