A Long-Ago Torch Rekindled: 5 Great Things This Week
Norwood Thomas, 93, holds up a photo of his long-ago girlfriend, Joyce Morris, at his home in Virginia Beach, Va.   (Bill Tiernan/The Virginian-Pilot via AP)

An inspirational mom and a sweet love story make the list:

  • Mom With Kids in Backseat Foils Carjackers: Just call her Supermom: A 21-year-old woman was pumping gas at a gas station in Hialeah, Fla., when two would-be carjackers tried to steal her vehicle. Her kids were in the back seat, however, and she just wasn't having it. This did not end well for the two guys.
  • WWII Sweethearts to Reunite: Norwood Thomas is a 93-year-old D-Day vet who still carries a torch for the girl he courted in England 70 years ago. The feeling is mutual, but he's in the US and 88-year-old Joyce Morris is in Australia. They're finally going to reunite, however, and it's all thanks to some generous (and romantic) donors.

  • Long-Gone Cat Is Going Home: A cat that went missing from its military family has been found four years later and is going home. Hemi disappeared in 2011 when the Connell family of North Dakota lived in North Carolina. When the cat turned up at a shelter, its microchip told the tale. Now it's just a matter of figuring out the return trip, and strangers are helping.
  • Remarkable Neighbor Lends a Hand: Done your neighbor a good turn this year? You might take a hint from Richard Mann of St. Paul, Minn., who was seen shoveling his neighbor's walk the other day after a snowfall. The reason it made headlines? Mann is 101. He's applying lessons learned nearly a century ago.
  • A Colorful Milestone in Space: If you need a break from headlines about blizzards, look up toward the International Space Station, where astronaut Scott Kelly managed to coax a plant into blooming. It's the first time in space, and it could be end up being a pretty big deal.
