David Bowie had many iconic roles in his lifetime, and Dominic Monaghan says the singer tried to add one more to the list. Monaghan, who played Merry in the Lord of the Rings trilogy, tells the Huffington Post that while he was auditioning for the role, he saw David Bowie go in for an audition as well. "I'm assuming he read for Gandalf," Monaghan says. "I can't think of anything else he would've read for." But according to the Guardian, LOTR director Peter Jackson "has long hinted" that Bowie was actually considered for the role of Elrond, lord of Rivendell, who ended up being played by Hugo Weaving.
