A federal cop accused of murdering his estranged wife and two strangers might have continued his killing spree if he hadn't lost his glasses, prosecutors say. At a hearing for 62-year-old Federal Protective Service officer Eulalio Tordil on Monday, prosecutors said he lost his glasses in a struggle with a woman that he killed while trying to carjack her SUV, the Washington Post reports. Prosecutors said that after allegedly shooting 65-year-old Claudina Molina outside a Giant supermarket in Aspen Hill, Md., Tordil, who couldn't see well enough to drive far without his glasses, went across the street to a shopping plaza, where he was arrested after visiting a Dunkin' Donuts and a Boston Market.
Police say Tordil killed his wife, Gladys, last Thursday and shot Molina and Malcom Winffel, 45, on Friday morning. They believe Winffel was shot during another botched carjacking in a parking lot, when he and a friend tried to help a woman being attacked by Tordil, CBS News reports. At Monday's hearing, Montgomery State's Attorney John McCarthy said that before police caught up with Tordil, they found suicide notes indicating that he believed he would be killed in a shootout with other officers. Tordil, who was stripped of his gun and badge in March after his wife sought a restraining order, faces charges including first-degree murder and is being held without bond, NBC Washington reports.
