Did Donald Trump just suggest gun-rights advocates could assassinate Hillary Clinton prior to the election? That's how a lot of people are reading his comments during a campaign rally Tuesday in North Carolina. "Hillary wants to abolish, essentially abolish the Second Amendment," the Los Angeles Times quotes Trump as saying. "By the way, and if she gets to pick, if she gets to pick her judges, nothing you can do folks. Although the Second Amendment people, maybe there is. I don’t know.” A spokesperson for a Clinton super PAC says it's clear Trump "suggested that someone shoot" Clinton. According to the New York Times, a Democratic lawmaker calls Trump's remarks "disgusting and embarrassing and sad."
The New York Times notes that even some Trump supporters in the crowd seemed stunned by Trump's apparent suggestion that gun-rights advocates could "take matters into their own hands." The Secret Service says it's aware of Trump's statement but wouldn't comment on a possible investigation into the presidential candidate. Meanwhile, the Trump campaign says he was just talking about political action. "Second Amendment people have amazing spirit and are tremendously unified, which gives them great political power," a campaign statement reads.
