If you get most of your news from Facebook, then there's a chance you've been very misled about Megyn Kelly. For a few hours Monday, a fake news article about the Fox News anchor was featured on the social media site's "Trending" topics section, Variety reports. The article, published on right-wing website Ending the Fed, claimed that Kelly is "a closet liberal who actually wants Hillary to win" and that she had been fired from Fox. Justin Green of the Independent Journal Review tweeted a screenshot of the article in the Trending list Monday and noted that it was "totally fake." Facebook has since removed the article from the list.
"This was a mistake for which we apologize, and it has been corrected," a VP tells CBS News. "A topic is eligible for Trending if it meets the criteria for being a real-world news event and there are a sufficient number of relevant articles and posts about that topic. Over the weekend, this topic met those conditions and the Trending review team accepted it thinking it was a real-world topic." The incident comes as Facebook is under scrutiny for allegedly having a liberal bias. Just last week, the social media company decided to let computer algorithms choose trending news and fired its entire editorial team, leaving engineers as the only humans involved in the process. It appears those algorithms chose the wrong story to promote and the engineers missed it in their review, the Washington Post notes. (More Facebook stories.)
