More bad news for Donald Trump: New York state has ordered his Trump Foundation to immediately stop soliciting money from people because it's not properly certified as a charity, reports the New York Times. The office of State Attorney General Eric Schneiderman sent the foundation a cease-and-desist order Friday and it was made public Monday. The move comes after the Washington Post reported last week that the foundation wasn't registered under something called article 7A of the state's Executive Law, as any charity that raises $25,000 a year from the public should be. It's no mere technicality: The lack of registration means the foundation avoids outside audits, notes the Post.
“The Trump Foundation must immediately cease soliciting contributions or engaging in any other fundraising activities in New York,” wrote James Sheehan, chief of the attorney general's charities bureau, in his notice to the foundation. He gave the organization 15 days to provide the necessary paperwork, adding that it must also file paperwork from previous years. Failure to do so “shall be deemed a fraud upon the people of the state of New York.” A Trump spokeswoman said that "while we remain very concerned about the political motives behind A.G. Schneiderman’s investigation, the Trump Foundation nevertheless intends to cooperate fully with the investigation." (More Donald J. Trump Foundation stories.)
