David Alcantara was wearing a Yankees baseball cap when he committed bank fraud and conspiracy to counterfeit currency, but his attempt to blame his conviction on the cap has failed. Alcantara committed his crimes in Rhode Island, Massachusetts, and Connecticut, and there's a legendary rivalry between New York Yankees fans and the Boston Red Sox fans who live in New England. Alcantara, assuming the Rhode Island jury that convicted him was full of Red Sox fans, appealed his five-year sentence on the basis that (among other things) his Yankees cap was mentioned multiple times during the trial and must have prejudiced the jury. However, the US Court of Appeals for the First Circuit has rejected that claim, USA Today reports. His conviction was upheld, per Massachusetts Lawyers Weekly. (More weird crimes stories.)
