Recreational marijuana is legal in the state of Oregon, but what's not is trading a bunch of it for a recreational vehicle—and it's extra likely to come to light if a cop is the one selling said vehicle. But Jason Owen allegedly tried to do just that after seeing a Craigslist ad hawking a snowmobile, per the Statesman Journal, putting out feelers to the seller to see if he or she would be willing to accept a pound of pot in exchange for the snowmobile. The seller, an Oregon State Police trooper, agreed, KPTV reports.
When Owen showed up at a local gas station Saturday night to seal the deal—cops say he had a pound and a half of pot, slightly more than what the original deal called for—he was greeted by a bunch of marked patrol cars, which conducted a traffic stop on Owen's car and reportedly found the pot. The Craigslist-frequenting trooper told Owen that even though pot is legal in the state, all pot transactions are required to go through the Oregon Liquor Control Commission or a medical marijuana dispensary registered with the Oregon Health Authority. Owen received a citation for marijuana delivery, and his car got taken away because he was driving with a suspended license. (Marijuana was the new crop featured at the Oregon State Fair this summer.)
