Things weren't looking good on the eve of their wedding. Alabama couple Desiree and Martez Cole had to have a heart-to-heart conversation about how material things aren't what really matter after Desiree's wedding ring slipped off during a walk along the harbor and fell into the Tennessee River. "I didn't know what to do," she tells WHNT.com. "I was so devastated." But if that seems bad enough, things took a serious turn for the "even worse" when, on the way to their honeymoon, they learned that more than half of their wedding guests had fallen ill, and soon Alabama's health department ruled it a salmonella outbreak and suspended the license of their wedding caterer, reports the AP. The culprit: the chicken and green beans.
But even though nearly 100 of their 150 guests ended up sick with vomiting, diarrhea, stomach aches, and fevers, and 22 ended up in the hospital, everyone's getting better and the couple sees it as an obstacle they've managed to overcome. "This was the first test of our marriage," Desiree says. "I believe we passed it." And there's more good news: Heartbroken about the loss of her ring, Desiree had reached out to area divers, and just before their ceremony a woman found her ring and, still wet in her dive suit, delivered it to the church. "I remember telling her I loved her," Desiree says. The couple say they're going to look into how to handle the caterer, but that right now they're more concerned about looking after their family.
