For the next head of the Democratic National Committee, Dem strategist Donna Gentile O'Donnell definitely doesn't want someone embroiled in daily shows of politics—she wants someone who used to head The Daily Show. Writing in the Philadelphia Inquirer, O'Donnell presents her case for why Jon Stewart should be the next person to helm the DNC—and "no, this is not a joke." Instead, it's a "recognition" that the Democrats' strategy this election "went down in flames," and that even though many factors were involved in Hillary Clinton's demise, the main reason is that the Democratic Party "didn't grasp the anger and disgust of too many Americans that have been left behind."
"These people are tired of being ignored and lied to and sick of watching Washington elites serve themselves while ignoring the needs of others," she writes. And Stewart can speak to these Americans, she notes, as he'd wield his celebrity, outsider status, and wealth much like Trump did, but add in his own signature thoughtfulness and humor to draw people into the party. "Stewart refuses to discard his friends who were Trump voters," she says. "He described them as average people who are just fed up. Such an approach is incredibly important to the future of the Democratic Party." She adds that she also needs "someone to make me laugh." Read O'Donnell's full argument at the Inquirer.
