Jimmy Hoffa, DB Cooper, Amelia Earhart—all disappeared and are now the unwitting subjects of decades of speculation, detective work, and conspiracy theories. Those three may claim the lion's share of the whispering, but Mother Nature Network has put together a list of other high-profile vanishings that have fallen into "the realm of the mostly unknown." Five especially intriguing cases:

  1. Harold Holt: Australian prime minister who disappeared in 1967 while out for a swim
  2. Henry Hudson: set adrift in a lifeboat in Hudson Bay by mutinous crew in 1611
  3. Bison Dele: former player for the Detroit Pistons who vanished in 2002 while on a catamaran in the South Pacific
  4. Azaria Chamberlain: the Aussie baby of "the dingo ate my baby" claim in 1980
  5. Dorothy Arnold: a Manhattan socialite who disappeared in 1910
Check out more of the mysteries at Mother Nature Network. (Amelia Earhart's plane actually was found … in a Clark Gable film.)
