Not all states are created equal when it comes to energy efficiency. WalletHub has a new ranking that crunches data in two broad categories—home energy efficiency and auto energy efficiency—to figure out the best and worst overall. As it turns out, the results put New York at the top and South Carolina at the bottom. (One caveat: Hawaii and Alaska were not included.)
The most energy-efficient states, followed by their overall rating out of 100, then their ranking in the home and auto categories:
- New York: 90.2; 4, 1
- Vermont: 84.8; 1, 13
- Utah 84.1; 2, 8
- Minnesota: 78; 3, 18
- Massachusetts: 77.9; 9, 5
- Rhode Island: 76.8; 11, 4
- California: 75.3; 15, 3
The least energy-efficient states, followed by their overall rating out of 100, then their ranking in the home and auto categories:
- South Carolina: 21.5; 48, 42
- Louisiana: 31.2; 45, 37
