Paul Manafort didn't get the break he was looking for in court on Monday, but it could come soon. A federal judge ordered that he and business associate Rick Gates continue to be held under house arrest with their movements tracked by GPS, reports CNN. However, negotiations on bail continue, and Judge Amy Berman Jackson suggested that once the details are ironed out, the pair will be allowed to travel within the US, though not overseas. "We are not talking about dangerousness," said the judge, per USA Today. "We're talking about [the risk of] flight."
Manafort and Gates have been charged with various money laundering and tax offenses that sprang up out of Robert Mueller's wide-ranging investigation. Though Manafort was President Trump's one-time campaign manager, these charges are unrelated to the campaign itself. Prosecutors are working out a complex deal in which Manafort would put up property and money as a hedge against him fleeing the country. As it stands now, he could face more than a decade in prison if convicted. (More Paul Manafort stories.)
