In 2016, there were more than 40,000 motor-vehicle deaths in the US, per the National Safety Council. And while factors beyond drivers' control, such as weather, may play a role in these fatalities, 24/7 Wall St. notes that "driver choice" (as in choosing to text or break the speed limit) is also important. The site ranked how safe each state's drivers are based on 140,000 users with the EverDrive app, which monitors driving habits. Here, the 10 states with the safest drivers:

  1. Montana: 35% (trips that involved phone use), 16.8% (trips that involved speeding; lowest of all states)
  2. Wyoming: 34%, 24%
  3. Alaska: 28.9%, 19.7%
  4. South Dakota: 34.9%, 22.6%
  5. Vermont: 27.2% (lowest of all states), 31%
  6. North Dakota: 30.4%, 20.3%
  7. Idaho: 37.5%, 20.4%
  8. Kansas: 35.7%, 22.7%
  9. Minnesota: 33.5%, 28.1%
  10. Iowa: 35.5%, 26.6%
