The US population as a whole may not be spiking, but in certain cities, there's been "explosive growth." That's per 24/7 Wall St., which examined seven years' worth of recent data from the US Census Bureau's Population Estimates Program to unearth the fastest-growing city in each state. It found that urban areas in the South and West saw the greatest jumps, while cities in the Northeast saw the least growth. The components that affected the numbers include natural population growth (births and deaths), people arriving from other countries, or domestic migration (the driver of growth in 23 of the fastest-growing cities on the list). Why people tend to move from state to state: They're in search of jobs, per a Brookings Institution demographer. Here, the 10 cities that enjoyed top ranking in their respective states, showing those with the largest growth rates:

  1. The Villages, Fla.; 32.8%
  2. Myrtle Beach-Conway-North Myrtle Beach, SC; 22.6%
  3. Austin-Round Rock, Texas; 22.5%
  4. Greeley, Colo.; 19.8%
  5. St. George, Utah; 19.7%
  6. Bend-Redmond, Ore.; 18.5%
  7. Raleigh, NC; 17.4%
  8. Daphne-Fairhope-Foley, Ala.; 16.1%
  9. Fayetteville-Springdale-Rogers, Ark.; 15.5%
  10. Fargo, ND; 15.3%
