Residents in the Golan Heights are taking shelter after a report from Israel's Defense Forces that Iran on Thursday fired about 20 "projectiles" from Syria directly at the Israeli military in the occupied territory—the first time Israel has accused Iran itself (not one of its proxies) of such actions. "At approximately … 10 minutes past midnight, forces [belonging] to the Iranian Quds Force fired approximately 20 projectiles, most of them … probably rockets (but that is yet to be determined) toward the forward line of IDF positions in the Golan Heights," says IDP spokesman Jonathan Conricus, per the Guardian. The Independent reports that an initial appraisal found the attack caused minimal damage, with the IDF able to intercept some of the projectiles; there are also said to be no Israeli casualties.
Israel has been on high alert after a report out of Syria Tuesday that said Israeli forces had attacked an Iranian-occupied military base south of Damascus, Haaretz reports. Per the New York Times, analysts had said Iran was holding back from retaliating until it saw whether President Trump pulled the US out of the Iran nuclear deal this week, which he did on Tuesday. Israeli forces aren't taking the newest incident lightly. The IDF "views this event with great severity and remains prepared for a wide variety of scenarios," an Israeli military statement noted, per the New York Times.
