One of Brett Kavanaugh's former drinking buddies at Yale says the Supreme Court nominee was not telling the truth when he testified before the Senate Judiciary Committee last week. In a statement Sunday, classmate Chad Ludington said he is "deeply troubled by what has been a blatant mischaracterization by Brett himself of his drinking at Yale," CBS News reports. Ludington, now a professor at North Carolina State University, said he "cringed" when he saw Kavanaugh testify, because he knew the nominee wasn't being honest in "denying the possibility that he ever blacked out from drinking, and in downplaying the degree and frequency of his drinking." Ludington said he knows that Kavanaugh was a frequent heavy drinker because he often drank with him in his first two years at Yale.

"On many occasions I heard Brett slur his words and saw him staggering from alcohol consumption, not all of which was beer," wrote Ludington, describing Kavanaugh as "belligerent and aggressive" when drunk. "On one of the last occasions I purposely socialized with Brett, I witnessed him respond to a semi-hostile remark, not by defusing the situation, but by throwing his beer in the man’s face and starting a fight that ended with one of our mutual friends in jail," he said. Ludington said that while he doesn't believe a person should be condemned for life for youthful drinking or "loutish behavior," he thinks lying under oath in front of the Senate should have "consequences" and he has taken his information to the FBI, the New York Times reports.
