A man desperate for cigarettes was given a vape pen by police on Saturday, thereby ending a six-hour standoff in Novato, Calif. Authorities say 40-year-old Juan Roman, troubled by issues with family, poured gas on the floor of a gas station, then tried to ignite it when he couldn't get a fuel pump to work around 7am. A standoff followed at a gas station less than a mile away, until police say Roman offered to surrender in exchange for cigarettes, per NBC Bay Area. Amid concerns about fuel on his clothing, Roman instead accepted a vape pen from a police robot around 1:30pm, police say, per the Marin Independent Journal. Roman was then arrested on suspicion of attempted arson and vandalism. He was not found to have a weapon. (Vaping is spiking among teens.)
