NPR. The deal includes no money for a border wall—that contentious issue will be left for negotiations over the coming weeks. "I am very proud to announce today that we have reached a deal to end the shutdown and reopen the federal government," Trump said in the Rose Garden. However, he added that if a "fair deal" doesn't emerge in three weeks, another shutdown may follow, and he again threatened to declare a national emergency in order to build the wall if that happens, reports the
Washington Post.
“No border security plan can never work without a physical barrier," said Trump. "It just doesn’t happen." The House and Senate were expected to quickly approve the deal and get it back to Trump for his signature, likely before the end of Friday. The deal will fund the government through Feb. 15, and it can't come soon enough for about 800,000 federal workers affected by the shutdown. Friday marks their second missed paycheck, though furloughed workers will get back pay under the deal. (Delays at major airports reached a peak on Friday.)
