"Ivanka Trump Vacuuming" has been making some waves, but what does the First Daughter herself think about the DC art exhibit that features a lookalike model vacuuming up breadcrumbs thrown by spectators onto a pink carpet? Not much, apparently: "Women can choose to knock each other down or build each other up. I choose the latter," she tweeted in response to an article about the exhibit. According to the press release from CulturalDC, the piece was inspired by Trump because her "public persona incorporates an almost comically wide range of feminine identities—daughter, wife, mother, sister, model, working woman, blonde," and it is meant as "a visual celebration of a contemporary feminine icon; a portrait of our own relationship to that figure; and a questioning of our complicity in her role-playing."
What does that last part mean, exactly? The artist, Jennifer Rubell, explains in the release that the "complicated," "icky truth" is that "we enjoy throwing the crumbs," having the power to make the Ivanka stand-in vacuum them as she continues to smile the entire time. Rubell, responding directly to Ivanka's tweet, said the work is not meant to "[knock] anyone down" and invited her to a private viewing so she could "form your own direct response." But Ivanka's family is on her side, with Donald Trump Jr. tweeting that it's "Sad, but not surprising to watch self professed 'feminists' launching sexist attacks" and Eric Trump telling Fox News his sister is "a powerful woman who has done more for women than probably anybody in Washington DC," per the BBC. The piece runs from 6-8pm Eastern every day until Feb. 17, or can be livestreamed at those times here. (More Ivanka Trump stories.)
