Sarah Silverman has put her radiologist on blast. The comedian posted about her "sh---y" mammogram appointment on Instagram Wednesday, explaining that due to dense breast tissue, she had to get an ultrasound afterward. The radiologist, who also did her ultrasound last year, first annoyed her by trying to chat while her breasts were exposed; she explained to him she was uncomfortable with that. Then he smeared the gel around with gloveless hands, and it got worse from there:
- "And when he glides the ultrasound wand thing over my breasts he drags his fingers on them and it f---ing bothers me. Again, AS I TOLD HIM LAST YEAR, I said 'Hey! Do you need to be touching me with your fingers?' He said 'No.' And he pulled them off of me. Then he added 'I do that for balance.' I said 'Well I believe in you and I think you can do with without your fingers on me.'"
She goes on to say that while she doesn't think the behavior was predatory or malicious on his part, part of his job is understanding that such procedures are "vulnerable" for women. Among other things, "wear f---ing GLOVES - this isn't a date," she writes. An expert tells Women's Health only a wand should have been used to touch Silverman's breasts, and gloves are indeed typically worn. The fact that the radiologist didn't "internalize" what the comedian told him when expressing the same discomforts last year makes him "arrogant"—and is also "probably a subconscious power thing if we’re getting deep," Silverman writes. She says she's fine, but this man and others like him take advantage of the fact that women are "socialized" not to stand up for themselves. "It’s uncomfortable and too easy to think it’s all in your head," she writes, but if you find yourself in a similar situation, "Trust that thing in your gut that tells you this s--t ain’t right," and say something. (Silverman says Louis CK masturbated in front of her—with her blessing.)
