If you still have your holiday decorations up, you may not have a great excuse. But a famous street in San Diego has a very good one, and it's heartwarming to boot. The residents of Rancho Penasquitos' Ellingham Drive, aka "Christmas Card Lane," are renowned for their Christmas spirit, spending weeks decorating their yards and houses so visitors from all over can see; the displays often stay up till well after Jan. 1. NBC San Diego notes that this year they stayed up even longer, because the good citizens of Ellingham were missing one of their own: 24-year-old Ryan Caine, who contracted a flu-like illness in mid-December, which quickly turned to pneumonia, which led to sepsis and to Caine being put in a medically induced coma. He stayed that way for about six weeks, and things didn't look good.
But slowly, Caine started regaining his strength, and on Jan. 24, he came out of his coma. One of his first queries to his mom, Janet: "Did I miss Christmas?" His mother assured him the holiday was "waiting for you at home," and flocks of neighbors lined the street Wednesday to welcome him back, singing Christmas carols and bearing posters and balloons. Inside his home, Caine was greeted with garland, gifts, and, of course, a fully decked-out Christmas tree. "I'm so blessed that Christmas is still here," Caine tells FOX 5. "I hope never to go back to a hospital again." KGTV notes Caine had one more Christmas wish: a trip to Disneyland. His parents say that's in the works. (More uplifting news stories.)
