It was a surprisingly simple plan as far as prison escapes go, but it worked like a charm. For a while. Maxine Feldstein, 30, posed as a sheriff's deputy to free Nicholas Lowe from the Washington County Detention Center in Arkansas, reports KFSM. She showed up at the prison as Deputy "L. Kershaw" from the Ventura County Sheriff's Office in California and presented bogus paperwork to have Lowe released, according to court documents. Out they went, and the ruse didn't come to light until a few days later when an actual VCSO deputy called to say he was coming to retrieve Lowe. The pair were arrested about a month later in Fayetteville, and Feldstein just learned the heavy price she will pay: 15 years in prison.
Feldstein was sentenced this week after pleading guilty to forgery, third-degree escape, and second-degree criminal impersonation, per THV11. As for Lowe, he received an additional one-year sentence for escape but also was credited with 167 days for time served. It's not clear why he was in jail in the first place or how long he will remain there. Court documents suggest it was Lowe's idea. A jail video captured him telling her to pose as the deputy and to say that Ventura County was "having issues with overcrowding and all low-priority extraditions have been suspended," according to an affidavit.
