Nancy Pelosi met with fellow Democratic leaders behind closed doors this week, and Politico reports by way of Democratic sources that she delivered quite a message: "I don't want to see him impeached, I want to see him in prison," the House speaker is quoted as saying about President Trump. The context is that Pelosi was once again rejecting the idea of starting impeachment proceedings in the House, as Rep. Jerry Nadler of the House Judiciary Committee and others want to do. Pelosi's preference is to skip impeachment, defeat Trump in 2020, then see him prosecuted for alleged misdeeds, per Politico. Pelosi's office is not confirming whether she spoke of prison, reports the Hill.

It's possible Pelosi was just "catering to her fellow Dems" with the tough language to appease them over the lack of impeachment, notes the conservative site Twitchy. The quote, though, was getting lots of attention, with the Drudge Report featuring it prominently with a red headline Thursday morning. Not that other Democrats haven't expressed similar sentiments. On Wednesday night, for example, 2020 candidate Sen. Elizabeth Warren said during an MSNBC town hall that if Trump "were any other person in the United States, based on what is documented in that (Mueller) report, he would be carried out in handcuffs," reports NBC News. (When Facebook refused to remove doctored Pelosi videos, Anderson Cooper grilled one of its execs.)
