A teacher missing for over 16 years has finally turned up—buried right out in the schoolyard, the BBC reports. Police in China say they've found the remains of Deng Shiping under the track of a school sports facility he wouldn't approve because he thought it was poorly made. A builder of the site at Xinhuang Middle School has apparently confessed to the killing, and more than 10 suspects are under arrest, per the Mirror. Deng was 52 or 53 when he refused to sign off on the facility and vanished in 2003. "The field and track were being built by the principal's relatives," said Deng's son. "He believed there to be serious build quality concerns, and that they were cutting corners."
The man who police say confessed is Du Shaoping, a builder in charge of the school project who later got arrested in a local gang crackdown, per Shanghaiist. After Deng went missing, his son filed a complaint against the school's principal, also Du's uncle, accusing him of skimming funds and approving subpar building materials, per Yahoo. Deng's son was 15 at the time of the vanishing and has campaigned for a full investigation ever since. "My father was persecuted and I am in pain because as his son I can’t clear his name," he wrote on social media. "I need justice … We have waited 16 years … the authorities must tell me what happened back then. I want nothing but the truth." (More murder stories.)
