A man allegedly carjacked a car with three kids inside—and ended up dead. The incident happened in Philadelphia Thursday night, while the mother took the children to a pizza store where the father of two of the kids was working, police say. She left the car running as she went inside, WPVI reports. The mother and father realized what was going on after Eric Hood drove off with the car, police say; they chased him to a red light and got Hood out. Hood assaulted the father, then tried to flee—when a crowd of onlookers descended upon him. They kicked and punched him until police arrived, ABC News reports. Hood was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The children were not injured in the incident. No charges have yet been filed, and police are reviewing surveillance video as well as footage posted to Instagram in an attempt to identify the people involved. Per the Philadelphia Inquirer, the father was allegedly involved in the beating, and per WPVI, the mother could potentially face charges for leaving the children, ages 7 months to 5 years, in the car. Hood's nephew says his uncle, 54—who had been arrested 24 times, most recently in 2007—had struggled with drug and alcohol abuse, but that the incident still came as a shock to his family. "I'm saddened that all this had to happen," he said. "I'm sad that my uncle lost his life doing something that's so out of character for him and for the kids, just going through it. There's no one that's winning in this incident. It's tragic all around." (More Philadelphia stories.)
