A disturbing video went viral this week—and led to a criminal investigation and, so far, three arrests in Chicago. The video, which has been viewed more than 6 million times since it was first shared on Twitter Tuesday, shows a young girl being beaten up by at least five people. (It's here, but note that it's violent.) According to community activist Stringer Harris, who was speaking on behalf of the family, the girl in the video is 15; the person who tweeted the video claimed to be friends with the girl and said she has "a mental disability that has been progressing since the passing of her mother" and was "jumped" by the group. Harris says the girl had thought of many of her attackers as friends, NBC Chicago reports: "The family do know who these kids are and they’re very upset about this because these kids took advantage of this young girl." Says police rep Jose Jara, "At this point it is believed the victim was invited out by some girls who are so-called friends" who then turned on her in an alley.
Harris says the group was taking the girl to a "guy to have relations with" and she didn't want to, which upset the rest of the teens. Sources say the attack happened Saturday and the teen disappeared afterward, but the where and when of the attack have not been officially confirmed; her family reported her missing Tuesday, the AP reports. She was found on a train that day and taken to a hospital, where she was treated and released. The Chicago Police Special Victims Unit is investigating and three teens have been arrested. "This is beyond disturbing to watch and this young girl deserves far better," Chicago Police Spokesman Anthony Guglielmi tweeted Tuesday night. On Thursday, he said three girls ages 13, 14, and 15 have been arrested and that charges include aggravated battery and mob action. Jara says the "sick and disgusting crimes" committed against the girl could also have included a separate sexual assault, which she reported to police after she was found. (More Chicago stories.)
