Evidence of Teen Fugitives Found on Banks of River

The Mounties have a new lead in their weeks-long search for two fugitive teenage murder suspects. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police said Tuesday that they had found items "directly linked" to Kam McLeod and Bryer Schmegelsky on the banks of the Nelson River, around 5.5 miles from where a burned-out vehicle used by the pair was found July 22, reports Reuters. McLeod, 19, and Schmegelsky, who turned 19 Monday, are suspects in three murders in British Columbia. The Mounties say the items found were "personal items."

A damaged rowboat was found in the area where the items were discovered, but divers found no other evidence. Dwayne Forman, mayor of nearby Gillam, Manitoba, says the items were found near a very turbulent stretch of the river. "It would not be a river that many people would survive," he tells the CBC. "It's not something you would go swimming in." (Last week, authorities said the search was being scaled back.)
