Feds Find 4 Tons of Pot in Shipment of Jalapeños
This Thursday, Aug. 15, 2019, photo released by US Customs and Border Protection shows marijuana mixed in with a shipment of jalape?o peppers seized by CBP officers in San Diego's Otay Mesa, Calif.   (U.S. Customs and Border Protection via AP)

An attempt to smuggle marijuana mixed in with jalapeño peppers didn't fool a K-9 unit at the Otay Mesa cargo facility in San Diego, authorities say. The pooches found pallets of pot and peppers Thursday in a tractor-trailer driven by a 37-year-old Mexican citizen, Customs and Border Protection says. Officials say the 7,560-pound shipment had an estimated value of $2.3 million, NBC reports. Earlier in the week, officers at the same facility found around 10,600 pounds of pot in a shipment of auto parts, reports the AP. The Los Angeles Times notes that while California is the world's biggest legal pot market, with sales expected to top $3 billion this year, the black market is still thriving and is almost three times the size of the legal market.
